Members of Congress are living off food stamps for a week to protest Republican cuts. It’s a challenge for them, but GOP cuts would hurt millions of everyday Americans.
Why does this not have more publicity. This needs it!
Signal boosting this A) because it deserves to be seen by more people, and b) because I appreciate some members of Congress are actually willing to see what it’s like living on food stamps in order to make their point about how horrifying cutting food stamps would be.
News flash, regressives: people on food stamps do not load up on Snickers bars and filet mignon. They’re limited in what they can buy, and oftentimes, it’s not enough to get by on. Go on thinking these are entitlements that let minorities live lives of luxury, comfortable in the knowledge that you’ll never go hungry.
You privileged, elitist pricks.
haha actually, food stamps can get you pretty much anything you want in the grocery store except for non-food/drink and alcohol/tobacco. I worked at a grocery store in Texas, and almost every single one of the people that used food stamps were getting prime cuts of meat, junk food, soda, etc…and could get the top brands, not just store brands. It was seriously disgusting seeing my tax dollars go to five bags of Cheetos for someone, and then they whip out a stack of $20s to pay for their cigs. And to think I lived paycheck to paycheck and didn’t rely on government support…because I got what I could AFFORD AND BUDGETED PROPERLY.
Forgive me in advance if I’m wrong about other states and how their SNAP works.
As for people on WIC…THAT IS HOW FOOD STAMPS SHOULD WORK. You can choose from a prescribed list of basic foods, all restricted to store brand. You don’t get fancy name brand items, but you DO get the necessary things to survive, and not much extra. It’s called an “assistance program” for a reason, and shouldn’t be to pay for everything!
What you can get is based on your actual circumstance, so if you have children of varying ages, other items are available depending on what their diet requires at that age.
Food stamps seriously need to be revised to only allow real food, and not not “junk food”.
Again, this is in Texas, so if it’s different/better in your state, great! I’m all for Congress doing this to get more visibility for the issue, but I really wish the program would get a revision so citizens in America aren’t shoveling out big chunks of their paychecks to pay for someone ELSE to get a pack of cookies when they really should be getting REAL food.
